FOOD SECURITY WORKSHOPS
Three sessions of a food security workshop was provided to seniors and other interested community member sin in the Fall of 2018 to forge new social relationships and supports related to food preparation. The sessions were about fall food preservation using lacto-fermentation, an age-old process of keeping and storing vegetables (either grown or purchased on sale) for long periods of time. Fermentation is a safe and healthy way to store food products and the process is much simpler, and less expensive, than canning or pickling. The second tutorial in these workshops included the creation of a garbage pail root cellar to store foods over the winter. Some low-income seniors in Richmond County own and live on their own properties. Many have some land and the ability to grow, preserve and store food.
